Are We Like Sodom?

Opening Thoughts: Have you very heard the phrase “There are two sides to every story”. This phrase is very common in a counselors office. The Bible often times will have two sides going on in a single story. Take for instance the one that we started last night in Luke 10, where Jesus gathers the 72 disciples together and instructs them to go and prepare peoples hearts for the Gospel. One side of the story was directed specifically at the disciples and their job of preaching the gospel. Another side of the story was directed at the hearers, when Jesus said that there is both a  ripe harvest who will embrace the truth, as well as others who will reject the gospel and even persecute them. – The reason I bring this up is because there will inevitably be people from both sides of the story that happen to read […]

Fields Filled With Wolves

Opening thoughts: Tonight I start in Luke 10. When I started reading it I got very excited because this topic is very near and dear to me. I admit that although I love evangelism I still hardly do it enough. I would venture to say we can never do it enough. There’s so much teaching out there on evangelism, some people say you should preach with actions, others say you should preach with words. When the late Bill Bright did a survey on how many professing Christians actually share their faith, the numbers that came in were shockingly devastating. Less than 2% of professing Christians in North America actually share the Gospel. I had a thought just now, If you were on the Titanic all those years ago and you were on a cruise with your family and friends. You were having a great time together when all of a […]

I Will Follow You

Opening Thoughts: Tonight we wrap up Luke chapter 9. One of the common threads throughout the Gospel of Luke is Jesus emphasizing what it really means to follow Him. This very day and throughout history the church has been filled with people that are both true disciples and false disciples. What I mean by true disciples is people that God has made a commitment to, not the other way around. We humans make so many commitments that we never follow through on. In fact many times we say things to people that we never even intend to get around to. Take for instance the phrase, “We should hang out sometime”. Now you likely have said that to someone or had it said to you, and you may or may not have actually intended to ever follow through with it. Or maybe you have said “I’ll give you a call”, can […]

Face Like a Flint

Opening thoughts: Okay, so I started reading tonight in Luke a continuation from last night, and right off the bat I was struck between the eyes with something really HARD .. a FLINT. If you don’t know what a flint it is a type of rock that is measured at 7 out of 10 on the “Mohs scale of mineral hardness” It’s very hard, therefore has been used as ancient tools, lighting gun powder etc. If you were able to wear a suit that was made entirely out of flint into battle, and still be able to move … nothing could penetrate you. What if our faces were made of flint?? Just a thought … This is where we transition into tonight’s continued study on Luke chapter 9. Scripture: Luke 9:51-56 ESV A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus: [51] When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he […]

Is Jesus Your Glass of Water?

Glass of Water

Opening thoughts: As I was reading this passage in Luke a couple things struck me. The first thing that really hit me was when Jesus says the words “Let these words sink into your ears” it’s likely something you should stop and think about. When I read it, the first thing I thought was “okay, you have my attention”.  Jesus puts a lot of emphasis on ears in the Gospels. “You who have ears” or “I say to you who hear” and “Be careful how you hear” and now He says “Let these words sink into your ears”. Jesus clearly wants us to pay attention. Selective Hearing: Our son Max has a bit of a problem with his ears, or should I say he has selective hearing, in other words, he hears what he wants to. We often tell him something and he will respond “Okay daddy”, then I will […]

Help My Unbelief

Luke 9

Luke 9:37-43 Opening thoughts: I have learned a lot over the past couple years. A couple years ago God showed me that I wasn’t genuinely saved and I was a slave to sin, through this dramatic encounter with God I was saved in seconds what I was trying to accomplish in human effort for 32 years. In a moment of time Jesus set me free from sin and set me on a new course, since that day all I’ve wanted to do is be with Him, lead my family and walk in the light. Through it all I have recognized that there is not a stitch of power in me whatsoever, without Him I am nothing. Living a Christian life is not something that can be taught, it’s something that takes place outside of your control….. And all it takes is this phrase “I believe, but help my unbelief”. Scripture: […]

Worthless Food!

Opening thoughts: Was a great day today, I had some really good times meeting with people that love Jesus. This evening I met with a man from our church who just lost his wife of 13 years to cancer. It was sudden and totally unexpected. He is now left to survive with 3 little kids, 5 yrs, 4 yrs, and 1 yrs old. As I spoke with him, I could not help but catch a glimpse of the pain he must feel. Tears welled up in my eyes as I pondered for a moment the thought of losing my wife, and how would my little babies do losing their mommy? and what would I do as their daddy? How would I explain the loss to my 5 year old? How would I help them find the hope of the Gospel to not only save them, but also bring peace to […]

Dusty Feet!

Shake The Dust Off Your Feet – Luke 9:1-6 Opening Thought: So tonight I continue my reading in Luke. I’ve finally gotten to Luke 9 and I will warn you to both brace yourself and take courage. The reason I say that is because this passage is somewhat shocking to say the least. What Jesus says between verses 1 and 6 are very controversial; however, as followers of this man ‘Jesus’ we should take heed to see how the first 12 students responded to his instructions.  Let’s see how Jesus tells us how to evangelize. Scripture: Luke 9:1-6 ESV … And he called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal. And he said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, no staff, nor bag, nor bread, nor […]

The Issue of Blood.

The Woman With the Issue of Blood – Luke 8:43-48 Opening Thought: So it’s been quite some time since I last published a blog post, and now here I find myself at midnight, after spending the past 3 hours alone with my Bible, typing away to the thought of how I’m so thankful that Jesus never stops bleeding. His blood is always there and it’s available for all who call on His name in repentance. Oh how I’m thankful for that! Where I’m Reading: I have been working my way through Luke’s Gospel. It has literally been all I’ve been reading and studying for about 4 months now and I’m about ready to finish up chapter 8. Call me a slow reader but I’d like to think it’s “meditating on the words of Jesus” and “studying to show myself approved”.  I find the more time I spend with God the […]

Good Tree, Bad Tree

No Good Tree Bears Bad Fruit – Luke 6:43-45 Opening Thoughts: Can you imagine seeing totally dead tree and on it’s branches was the most amazing fruit? It’s impossible. What about if you were on a journey and were desperately hungry, in front of you a ways ahead you could see an orchard filled with big green fruit trees, you were so excited to sink your teeth into some nourishing, refreshing fruit, but as you approached them you realized there was no fruit on these trees. They were barren. What a disappointment. Luke 6:43-45 “For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the […]
