Fields Filled With Wolves

Opening thoughts: Tonight I start in Luke 10. When I started reading it I got very excited because this topic is very near and dear to me. I admit that although I love evangelism I still hardly do it enough. I would venture to say we can never do it enough. There’s so much teaching out there on evangelism, some people say you should preach with actions, others say you should preach with words. When the late Bill Bright did a survey on how many professing Christians actually share their faith, the numbers that came in were shockingly devastating. Less than 2% of professing Christians in North America actually share the Gospel. I had a thought just now, If you were on the Titanic all those years ago and you were on a cruise with your family and friends. You were having a great time together when all of a […]

I Will Follow You

Opening Thoughts: Tonight we wrap up Luke chapter 9. One of the common threads throughout the Gospel of Luke is Jesus emphasizing what it really means to follow Him. This very day and throughout history the church has been filled with people that are both true disciples and false disciples. What I mean by true disciples is people that God has made a commitment to, not the other way around. We humans make so many commitments that we never follow through on. In fact many times we say things to people that we never even intend to get around to. Take for instance the phrase, “We should hang out sometime”. Now you likely have said that to someone or had it said to you, and you may or may not have actually intended to ever follow through with it. Or maybe you have said “I’ll give you a call”, can […]

Face Like a Flint

Opening thoughts: Okay, so I started reading tonight in Luke a continuation from last night, and right off the bat I was struck between the eyes with something really HARD .. a FLINT. If you don’t know what a flint it is a type of rock that is measured at 7 out of 10 on the “Mohs scale of mineral hardness” It’s very hard, therefore has been used as ancient tools, lighting gun powder etc. If you were able to wear a suit that was made entirely out of flint into battle, and still be able to move … nothing could penetrate you. What if our faces were made of flint?? Just a thought … This is where we transition into tonight’s continued study on Luke chapter 9. Scripture: Luke 9:51-56 ESV A Samaritan Village Rejects Jesus: [51] When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he […]

Are you Expecting?

As of today I am 33 weeks and 5 days pregnant. I’m sorry to say I had to actually look at a calendar and figure out what week I was on to provide that information for you. We are expecting our third child, and while our excitement and love for him or her is equal to that of our first two children we are just too busy to count down the days until “the Big Day” as we did for the others. Besides, as many of you know who have children already, rarely does the precious package arrive on “the Big Day”. For most of us, we know that baby arrives precisely when he or she is ready and not a moment too soon. A few days before “the Big Day” (sometimes a few weeks before) expectant parents eagerly wait for any sign of labor. I remember with my first […]

Flabbergasted by God!

Opening Thoughts: I love spending time in the Bible, then writing my thoughts out here. Last night I joined the disciples in being “Flabbergasted by God” when I read Luke 9:43…. Yup, you heard me! One verse in which I spent about an hour dissecting. When I first started studying scripture a few years ago, I would blast through a chapter thinking that I needed to at least cover that much in order to feel like I was actually reading something. The reality wast, that most times I could hardly put two thoughts together from what I just read because there was simply to much said there. Often times our little daughter Sarah will pack her mouth so full that it is impossible for her to chew, she will then begin to spit it all out and  and then refuse to eat at all.  This is what it’s often like […]

Help My Unbelief

Luke 9

Luke 9:37-43 Opening thoughts: I have learned a lot over the past couple years. A couple years ago God showed me that I wasn’t genuinely saved and I was a slave to sin, through this dramatic encounter with God I was saved in seconds what I was trying to accomplish in human effort for 32 years. In a moment of time Jesus set me free from sin and set me on a new course, since that day all I’ve wanted to do is be with Him, lead my family and walk in the light. Through it all I have recognized that there is not a stitch of power in me whatsoever, without Him I am nothing. Living a Christian life is not something that can be taught, it’s something that takes place outside of your control….. And all it takes is this phrase “I believe, but help my unbelief”. Scripture: […]

Hide and Seek

No One Seeks God – Romans 3:9-20 New Ways: I’m not sure what your thoughts are on this, but I have observed over the past several years that the church in a general sense, has come up with some pretty slick ways of making new converts in a world filled with outward moralist’s but who are totally uninterested in the Gospel. We have studied the culture, watched the movies for good sermon analogies, identified with the music in order to draw crowds (in fact I know of several churches that open up their services to ACDC, Coldplay and Lady Gaga…. I’m not even kidding). We have become very good at making people feel comfy in a church, or should I say in our ‘campuses’, the offensive crosses have been removed and replaced with missional type slogans and globes and our social justice efforts have tripled. We strive to accommodate the […]

Are You Booked?

Are You in the Book: I’m not sure if you have ever been mentioned in someones book? Can you imagine reading a book from some popular author who you didn’t know and he/she mentions you specifically in it. That would be an amazing thing, in fact, you would likely bring that book around to everyone you know and show them that you’re name is in there. It would be a noteworthy occasion. We know that type of situation would never happen, if you didn’t know them you would never even expect to have your name included in the book, would you? What about if you ‘knew’ an author who was really famous and you guys had hung out and spent time together. One day He publishes this book on everyday life and what goes on. You eagerly buy the book assuming for sure you will find your name on the […]

Have you Not Read?

Figure it out For Yourself As I was driving today I saw a van in front of me with a blaring neon yellow bumper sticker (stuck to the back windshield) that read “Try Jesus”, and that was it, off they drove evangelizing to all the vehicles around them that “Hey, if nothing else works, ‘Try Jesus’.” What happens when they “Try Jesus” and then their car gets broken into, or they lose their job or worse, their child? Of course Jesus is the only solution for all mankind, but if they don’t understand that their problem is actually their sin, then they will “Try Jesus” for the wrong reasons. I’m sure the driver of that van was well-intentioned, but it pays so much to tell it all, and not just try to condense the gospel to a couple of words on a bumper sticker. Figure it out with Help from […]

Who Do You Say I Am?

Who is Jesus – Luke 9:18-20 The Cost of Identifying with Christ: What is the cost to identify yourself with Jesus? To recognize Him not just as being a man but as The Christ of God. The cost is immense, it’s so unbearable that it can only be done through the power of the Holy Spirit. I heard a quote one time, “I don’t mind being a servant of Jesus Christ, I just don’t want to be treated like one.” The treatment of the followers of Jesus is hard, it’s cruel and not enjoyable in the least. In fact, if you would like to know how hard it is to profess Jesus as the Christ you should try some daily evangelism. The issue in our culture is that we have labeled any type of persecution for declaring the Gospel of Christ as the wrong approach. Let me explain, someone goes […]
