Blessed is the Womb that Bore You — Luke 11:27-28
Opening Thoughts: Have you ever been at a conference or a service where the speaker asks people in attendance to “Quickly shout out an answer to their question” or in one sentence explain it… You start to sweat because you really want to say something, because in your opinion you have the 100% correct answer to the question. You hear several people give their answers and they sound pretty good, but you know you can top it if you can just get the courage. You finally go for it, you stand up and blurt it out! Everyone turns to look and the pastor immediately says “that’s not exactly what I was thinking”, Ouch! Or how about this, I was in a service one time when a guy in the middle of the service stood up and walked onto to the pulpit and started spouting off about what he knew and totally interrupted the service. This is kind of what happens here in Luke 11:27 ….
Scripture: Luke 11:27-28 .. “As He said these things, a woman in the crowd raised he voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” V28. But He said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
Nothing to do with it: In the days when Jesus was on the earth, women were supposed to stay silent in church. Paul talks about this and says that a woman should stay silent in church and then ask and learn from her husband. I bring this up for no other reason than for a woman to speak up and blurt something out in the middle of a teaching session from a Rabbi was taboo in the first place. So it was likely a rather awkward moment, but Jesus gracefully uses this to teach an incredible truth.
Jesus had just cast out a Mute demon from a man showing the crowd that He had dominion over evil spirits. He then taught them the importance of placing all their trust in Him, in which His Spirit would take up residence leaving no occupancy for any evil spirits upon return. His warnings were serious and above all He spoke with authority. Upon taking all this in, the woman obviously has a revelation of who He is, and can no longer contain herself, so she shouts out her thoughts. The reason I called this section “nothing to do with it” is because just because you have an amazing son doesn’t mean that God’s blessing follows you. This has already been a huge issue with the Israelites in their dealings with Jesus. He’s already told them that it doesn’t matter who their ancestors are, it doesn’t mean they are in. This is a very common problem in North America as well. So much of our young adults and youth are being deceived into thinking they are saved and have an eternal blessing because they were born into a Christian home, and they have gone to church every week for 25 years, oh yeah and let’s not forget the magic potion, they prayed a prayer when they were 6! Jesus get’s right to the heart of this wrong thinking and says “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” In other words forget about my bloodline, who my parents are, etc. The question is do you obey what I tell you?
Do You Obey His Word? I was listening to a Francis Chan message the other night (whom I love), and he was talking about how so many professing Christians go to church and say stuff like this: Christian #1 “I heard the most intense message ever a few weeks ago … Christian #2 “what did you do with it” … Christian #1 “I went back and listened to another one the next week!” WOW! what comes to mind when you hear something like that? I mean, does Jesus really think it’s okay that we sit in church week after week and hear people read the “Word of God” and articulate it, then we go ahead and do absolutely nothing with what we have heard? Do you think He’s okay with that? So if blessing follows those who hear the word of God and keep it, what happens to those who hear it and do nothing about it, yet come back week after week after week? Jesus in the sermon on the mount contrasts the message of “Blessed are you” with “Woe to you”. Perhaps the same is true here? For the person who hears the word of God and doesn’t keep it, woe to you.
Am I Talking About Works Based Salvation? Some at this point might think or conclude that I am speaking of some type of works based salvation. I’m not. If eternal blessing was given to those who worked hard to obey his commands then it would be a works based reward, a real genuine at-a-boy! But it’s not that way, If you obey all that He commands it’s because you have had a heart transplant, the old heart has been removed and there has been a new one put in it’s place. The desires that you once had in your old heart were trashy and fleshy, ones that were at enmity against a holy God. But this new heart that He gives the genuine believer comes built in with His desires included. That’s UNREAL when you think about it. God takes out your heart of stone, which is a DEAD heart, and gives you fully loaded one straight from His factory that is equipped with His desires. Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
1 John 14:15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Ezekiel 36:27 And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
I Will Cause You: This is my favorite part of the whole message, because all my hope comes from Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross. Ezekiel’s prophecy about what was completed through the cross of Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit for all true believers speaks for itself. When someone is a true genuine believer they don’t have to be brow beat to obey His commands, but rather they will obey His command therefore because they’re His children, His blessing of eternal hope is promised to them.
If you find that you have been in church your whole life, you prayed a prayer at some point, but you just can’t seem to follow Jesus or His commands, it could very well be that you lack genuine saving faith. This is where God performs a miracle and you have been saved and changed for His glory. If all evidence points out that you lack the power within you to obey, then you likely lack salvation. If that’s you, please repent of your sins, call on the name of the Lord today and trust in Jesus as your only hope of escaping God’s justice.
Romans 8:30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
